Have you checked out Brown alumni groups on social and professional networking sites lately? The Brown Alumni Association group on LinkedIn is poised to pass the 2,000-member mark, and new alumni groups pop up regularly on Facebook.

 Asian/Asian American Alumni Alliance (A4) Call for Nominations

Congratulations to Rakim Brooks ’09!
The Africana Studies concentrator is among next year’s 32 Rhodes Scholars. One of three Brown students to receive the honor in the past five years, he will pursue an M.Phil. in comparative social policy at Oxford University.

 Football Clinches Championship with 41-10 Win*; 15 Players Honored
For the first time in Brown football history, departing seniors have won two Ivy League championships. Fifteen players earned All-Ivy honors this season—eight to the first team—and four were selected to the All-New England Team.

International Partnership Will Promote Transnational Research and Learning
A series of Brown International Advanced Research Institutes, co-sponsored by the Spain-based Banco Santander, will convene young scholars from emerging markets and the global South. The program will also include study-abroad grants, internships, and Spanish language instruction for the Brown community. See story and photos.

Brown Among Top U.S. Producers of Fulbrights
Brown ranked seventh in the nation and third in the Ivies for the number of Fulbright fellowships awarded for 2008–09, and its percentage of winners to applicants is second only to Yale’s. Twenty-one recent Brown graduates are currently studying abroad on Fulbright grants.

Household Exposure to Toxic Chemicals Largely Unrecognized
Many women are surprised to learn of the extent to which toxic exposure is caused by personal, in-home products such as cosmetics, plastics, and cleaners, says a study by sociologist Phil Brown and Rebecca Gasior Altman ’08 PhD.

Rhode Island experts on aging, including Richard Besdine, director of the University’s Center for Gerontology and Health Care Research, are collaborating on designs for nursing homes that will transform them into attractive destinations instead of “last-resort” options.

Geological sciences professor James Head ’69 PhD contributed to a groundbreaking discovery of huge, buried glaciers in the mid-latitudes regions of Mars.

Women’s Crew Sweeps Foot of the Charles
The women’s crew team won all three events and easily took the team title at the Foot of the Charles Regatta in Boston, marking the best team score for that race in school history and wrapping up the season with an impressive victory.
